Welcome to The Setup Loft

A new home for the developers, designers, and creators who care how their workspace performs, looks, and feels. Here is what we are building, and why.

Your setup obsession starts here.

We built The Setup Loft because the rest of the setup internet is broken. Affiliate sites churn “Top 10” lists assembled from Amazon descriptions. Influencers dropship the same five products. YouTubers read specs off product pages and call it a review. Meanwhile, a real community of obsessives spends hours considering monitor arms, debating switches, treating their workspace like something they’re designing instead of just using. That community deserves a real publication. This is it.

Who we’re for

We’re for software developers first. Designers, creators, remote-working professionals, and serious gamers next. What unites everyone we write for is intentionality and taste. You care how your setup performs, how it looks, and how it feels to spend hours in it. Whether you’re upgrading from your first build or refining your fifth, this is where you come for the gear, the inspiration, and the community that takes the obsession seriously.

We’re not for budget hunters who just want the cheapest possible. We’re not for the “RGB everything, more is more” crowd. We’re not for people who want to clone an influencer’s exact setup. That’s fine. There are other sites for that.

What we publish

Three kinds of work.

Reviews and buying guides. We test what we recommend, and we’ll tell you when something isn’t worth it. The Loft Approved badge means we’ve used the product for at least four weeks and we’d spend our own money on it at the price we’re recommending. Negative reviews are welcome here. “We tried this and don’t recommend it” is rare in affiliate content, and we’ll write it whenever it’s true.

Featured setups. Real readers, real desks, with our editorial take on what’s distinctive. Every week. The community side of the brand. Submission flow ships with the apps.

Opinion pieces and field guides. When we have a position worth defending, or a framework worth codifying, we publish it. These are slower and less frequent. We’d rather post two pieces a month you remember than ten you don’t.

How we stay honest

Honesty is the brand. We’ve watched this go wrong elsewhere (Hodinkee being the most painful recent example), and we know the traps. Our commitments:

  1. Loft Approved is earned, not assigned. No shortcuts.
  2. We disclose every affiliate relationship visibly, not in a footer.
  3. We disclose every review unit inline at first mention.
  4. Pay-for-placement is categorically off the table. Always.
  5. We update or unpublish articles when products change. Stale “Best of 2024” content is how affiliate sites lose trust.
  6. Editorial control never goes to a brand. Not for sponsorship, not for review access, not for anything.

If any of that changes, we’ll say so on the front page, not in a footer.

What’s next

A handful of guides go live this month. Ultrawide monitors, standing desks under a thousand dollars, our first mechanical keyboard round. The Mac and Windows apps ship later this year, and the community submission flow lives there.
